My mission: explore Europe.  The goal: 26 new cities in 365 days.  Here is my list.  Let me know if you have any suggestions of places I should go, I will try my best! Each city name is a link to a map, so you can follow along.

L: Liberec, Czech Republic (Jan 30-31) X-country ski weekend (see prev. post)
M: Mělnik, Czech Republic (Sept 17) Went to a Burčak (young wine) festival and listened to music, drank fermenting grape juice and wandered around enjoying a great fall day in the CZ.
N: Naples, Italy (Oct 1-4) A town I've wanted to visit since my first visit to Italy in 2003.  It was full of life and energy.
O: Ostrava, Czech Republic (July 15-19) Colours of Ostrava Festival. From 100F temperatures (38C) to 60F (16C) overnight. Mud and rain galore, Hawk and a Hacksaw, Regina Spector, Iggy and the Stooges.
P: Podebrady, Czech Republic (October 28) A day of dice, castles and the unknown.

Z: Zadní Třebaň, Czech Republic (Nov 14, 2011) Atypical Czech village- the only pub was closed for technical reasons.  So we crossed the street and went to another Třebaň, with the best Schnitzel. Ever.

As you can tell by now, I LOVE to cook!  I am always trying new recipes and experimenting with different types of food.  Below is a list of things I decided to try.  Let me know if you want any recipes or have any challenging recipes for me!

Yet another lost Fall post:

The Czech Republic is famous for its beer, not its wine.  And for pretty good reason (sorry, but it's TRUE!).  I do like the whites, there are a few varietals that aren't too sweet for me, but the reds...sorry Moravia, but you just don't have the right weather for red wine...  But I'd heard that the winery visits in the Czech Republic are not to be missed.

Adventure #125- Shin Karate

My stepbrothers were very into martial arts when we were younger, as were a lot of their friends. Even now, one is in China working with his Sensei and another is 3 belts away from his black belt, and one of the friends has his own studio. As a tomboy at heart, I've always wanted to join them and have that control over your mind and body.

Adventure #124- Skiing in the Alps

I am an avid snowboarder. One thing that has been missing from my life in Prague has been mountains. When you grow up in a valley and you are constantly surrounded by them, the mountains are a part of your life. It is always easy to go hiking, snowboarding, skiing etc. When you live in Prague, the closest mountains are an hour bus ride away, and well, let's just say they are ideal for beginners. 

 

I have been in Europe for 3 winters now. The first, I was too poor to even think about it. The second I went back to Reno so there was no more vacation time/money in the budget. And last winter, I finally made it! Twice.

Adventure #123, #122, #78 - #74 - Angela and FOOD!

In a new country, there are always new foods to try.  Some of them are similar but different, some are deemed interesting, others just seem plain disgusting!  There are types of produce I have never seen (kohlrabi, pomelo) and other types that I discarded from the 'like' column when I was younger.

Adventure #121- Czech Switzerland

A lost story from last fall:

When you talk to Czechs about the 'nature' they will tell you that there are a few places you must go. One of them is České Švýcarsko, or Czech Switzerland. There is Pravčická Brána, a stone bridge, and lots of cool sandstone cliffs and rock croppings. This was a place that was my list of places to go last summer. I made it to half the list last year, but didn't make it to Czech Switzerland. Our plans were made and some cottages selected for accommodation.

"A place where you can find everything to build a car" is, according my 8 (in Czech, pronounced osm, like awesome;) flatmate, the definition of the place I went on last Saturday : the Kolbenova bazar in Prague.

Adventure #119- The Roll of the Dice

When I was a teenager and had nothing to do at night but drive around all night, we used to decide where to go by flipping a coin.  Heads was one number and either right or left.  Tails was another number and whichever direction heads wasn't.  We'd flip the coin and turn as the coin said (the numbers were for the freeway).

This year, I had one of the best birthday presents ever (it's going to be hard to do better now) : a seat at the Vivienne Westwood Red Label fashion show, introducing the collection for autumn 2011 - winter 2012.

As Michal and Jana - our former flatmates in Prague - came back from 4 months of traveling in South America, they stopped a few days in London and stayed with me. One evening, we cooked Argentinian food : empanadas and flan. Yummy !

Every city has many pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafes.  As a creature of habit, I generally go to the same places all the time.  Friends recommend places, places look new and interesting, but I almost always forget about them when the time comes to eat, drink or dance.  Here's my attempt at 1. discovering Prague, 2. expanding my circle of regular places, and 3. striving to 'Eat, Drink and be Merry!'
